Data Funders Collaborative - Federal Role in Data

Program Dates
April 23, 2021 12:00 p.m. ET

Virtual - On behalf of the Data Funders Collaborative, we invite you to take part in a meeting on Friday, April 23rd from noon-1:30 ET to discuss federal opportunities to strengthen data systems that serve learning from early childhood through postsecondary education and training, workforce development and social services.  This is a conversation hosted by and for funders to explore philanthropy’s role in incenting and fostering innovation around the use of information to better serve all people’s information needs. The increase in federal funding from ARPA and potential infrastructure-focused bills, the Biden Administration’s Executive Orders around equity and the use of data, as well as the ongoing implementation of the Evidence Act create a unique moment for philanthropy to be strategic about its investments to  support the use of data as a tool of transparency, improvement, equity, and empowerment.

The Data Funders Collaborative (DFC) is a community of philanthropic practitioners working together to seed and lead dialogue and actions around the collection and ethical use of data to empower communities, increase equity, and improve outcomes in the education, workforce and social services sectors.  The 11 foundations which comprise the DFC have been focusing on better understanding the opportunities to address the inadequacies of  information systems which create barriers to our goals and the work of grantees to support better decision making and outcomes in education, health, social services, and economic mobility and workforce development efforts.  We are excited about the conversations we have been having among ourselves and are eager to expand these to include other foundations to learn together, identify areas of common interest for deeper dives in our learning, and to consider potential opportunities for co-funding in this space.  Therefore, we are launching a series of quarterly meetings over the next year to explore these topics together.

Our first quarterly meeting will take place on Friday, April 23rd from noon-1:30 ET.  Former OMB senior staff Kathy Stack will provide an overview of the current federal data landscape and highlight potential areas for innovation and improvement. This overview will be followed by a panel of federal agency data leaders  who will share their current and planned efforts to strengthen the role of data.  The final third of our time together will be spent in conversations among the funders about opportunities specific foundations are executing and/or exploring to support the prioritized focus on building a stronger information system that meets people’s needs.
