Supporting Young People’s Mental Health & Well-being in Out-of-School Time Programs: Out-of-School Time Stakeholder Convening

  • Wellness happens on a continuum & OST plays an important part in supporting young people’s wellness.

  • Organizations need flexible funding to adapt services; philanthropic $ supports innovation.

  • Mental health is part of a whole child approach.

  • Access to mental health services continues to be a challenge for youth & families – CBOs can help young ppl see a professional immediately.

  • Dearth of culturally responsive mental health providers & CBOs are competing for staff with districts.

  • Need to invest in non-traditional mental health providers.

  • Importance of understanding trauma and recognizing behaviors in young ppl related to trauma.

  • Need for self-care of the adults working with youth experiencing trauma.

  • Offer a range of services - short-term counseling (low-moderate symptoms) & formal referral process to partners that are rooted in cultural competence.

  • Peer to peer prevention strategy – mental health advocate training for young people on mental health first aid, self-care, and mental health training.

In this session, we'll hear from two funders that have shifted practice to fund programs that support young people's mental health and well-being and two practitioners who will share strategies on how to embed mental health practices into youth development programming. During the session, you'll also join a small working group to contribute your own ideas and questions for how you as a funder or field leader are supporting this work.
