In 2012, Grantmakers for Education’s Urban Education Study Tour provided rich, place-based learning experiences for funders seeking to explore effective grantmaking strategies that support student achievement, constructive partnerships, and systemic improvements. The tour visited three cities—El Paso, Texas, Newark, New Jersey, and Oakland, California—and focused on students of color, English language learners, the P-20 education system, and productive relationships between districts and education philanthropy.
This field experience offered a unique view into specific education reform strategies and the ways in which grantmakers engage with districts in the process of reform. Sharing what’s worked and exploring setbacks and challenges deepened individual grantmakers’ understanding and knowledge of the efforts they currently fund or may fund in the future.
GFE is pleased to feature reports summarizing findings and conditions in each of these three cities. Scroll down to read and download the reports.
