Registration now open for GFE's 14th annual conference

Join us October 27-29 in New Orleans for GFE’s 14th annual conference, The Fierce Urgency of Now: Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence and Equity.

The American promise of education as the fundamental driver for upward mobility and national prosperity stands in peril. Increasingly frustrated by the pace of incremental improvement, education grantmakers seek more powerful approaches to achieve systemic change. How can we build new partnerships that deepen our collective impact? How can we harness the potential of innovation, while grounding our efforts in rigor and a deep understanding of what works? What role can grantmakers play in building the public will necessary to transform and invigorate the entire education pipeline, from early learning through postsecondary education?

To respond to these critical questions, GFE is convening the nation’s largest gathering of education funders. We invite you to join us in New Orleans, where, five years after Hurricane Katrina and the levee breaks damaged or destroyed over one hundred schools in a chronically troubled district, both the promise and the crisis of American education remain in sharp focus. Even as we celebrate resilience and highlight models of success, we will gather with a heightened sense of immediacy, a keener sense of opportunity and a renewed commitment to providing equity and excellence for all learners.

Register today to be part of this important gathering.

Deepen your conference experience by joining us for special pre-conference programming on October 26, which includes three funder network convenings; a screening of Beyond the Bricks, a documentary examining one of the most troubling and persistent problems in American education—the consistently low outcomes for black males; and a town hall discussion with local families sharing their experiences in New Orleans public schools and providing insights to amplify the urgency of our work.

Means and Ends: Competing Visions for the Future of American Education

Despite our shared commitment to improving education, grantmakers face deep divides on how to achieve and sustain meaningful gains in student outcomes across the education pipeline. As you gather with grantmaking colleagues from across the country to share best practices, you’ll find important opportunities to think deeply about competing visions for education reform.

At our Thursday plenary, Linda Darling-Hammond of Stanford University and Rick Hess of the American Enterprise Institute will lead a spirited exploration of the future of American education. Debating topics ranging from education policy to specific classroom practice, Hess and Darling-Hammond will challenge each other and the audience to sharpen our collective understanding of what we should do today to transform educational systems and outcomes in the years ahead.
